Brown Bears - Europe

This unique five day safari visits the Western Tatras mountains in Slovakia, where there is a healthy population of Brown Bears that can be viewed in their natural habitat.
A recent census estimates that there are 1200 bears in this area as well as two species of deer (Roe and Red), good birdlife and other predators such as Wolves, Lynx and Wildcats (although these other predators are more elusive).
The safari starts and ends at Poprad–Tatry Airport in the Slovak ski resort town of Poprad, with flight links from Londons Luton airport.
This safari includes daily walks in the mountains as guided Bear watching is done on foot. Guests should be comfortable with walking approximately two miles on gradual gradients.

Great Migration

This great migration across Tanzanias Serengeti National Park is a spectacle of nature and an iconic safari option for avid travellers, nature lovers and those who want a little more from their African experience.

Our camp follows the migration as it moves through the Serengeti, therefore the start and end locations together with the first and last nights local accommodation alter accordingly first from June to mid July and then our base moves to cover the period to the end of October. You'll find both itineraries in this Tanzania section.

Our camp accommodation is in Bush Rover Suites that are working Land Rovers which drive in to each location and set up to accommodate 8 people in 4 Bush Rover suites. Each Bush Rover camp has a staff of 2 chefs, 2 waiters, guide and rangers. The Bush Rover Suites do not transport guests. Each camp is a set seasonal camp which guests arrive at similar to other camps in the Serengeti but with a unique look and function in the most iconic safari vehicle – Land Rover. The elevation of the bedroom and balcony means that we can get closer to the action whilst still being secure. Each Bush Rover Suite has a 14 x 16 ft bedroom platform raised up over the roof of the vehicle, shower, bath and flush toilet in each unit and powered from a solar panel for 24-hour lights and hot water in each suite. The balcony in each suite looks over the migration in whichever camp we are situated. Meals are taken in a large comfortable mess tent or under the stars dependent on weather.

From your beautiful elevated bedroom with its balcony looking out to the wilderness, to the wood panelled bathroom, no screw has been left unturned to smooth your outdoor living. You will have the modern comforts of solar powered hot water, lights and power sockets to recharge your batteries. What more could you want? Most importantly, unlike fixed camps and lodges, the Bush Rovers move to the right places to provide the safari of a lifetime, to experience splendid isolation in total comfort. Blessed with a spectacular array of wildlife and the world's largest migration circuit, the Serengeti is ultimate safari country. This adventure lets you witness the unbeatable natural phenomenon of over one million wildebeest making their journey from the Maasai Mara, from the exclusive luxury of a Bush Rover suite. The camp will be set up at the heart of the migration, in a site specially chosen following years of research and knowledge, to make sure guests have an amazing experience but one they share with nobody else.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1
Your safari begins at Mwanza airport. On arrival you will be met and transfer to the Little Okavango Camp nestled between The Serengeti and Lake Victoria,
On arrival at Mwanza airport, meet your guide and then transfer by road to Little Okavango camp, so-called because of its proximity to narrow water channels full of tall Papyrus grasses which feed down to the expanse of Lake Victoria. The driving will take you about 2 hours passing through the unusual city of Mwanza known as the “Rock City”, due to its huge boulders scattered across the wider landscape. Arrive at the intimate Little Okavango Camp in time for lunch. In the late afternoon, head out on a gentle canoe ride on the waterways around Victoria Island, and out onto the lake itself. In the evening, relax by the campfire before dinner beneath the stars.

Day 2
Awake at dawn for a quick cup of tea or coffee and head out onto the vast Lake Victoria by motor boat and explore the lakeside for fantastic birdlife, hippos and crocs right up to the fishing village of Mwaburugu- meet local boat builders from the Sukuma tribe and watch life on the lakeside with the men bringing in their catch. The tour lasts for 4 - 5 hours and gives a fascinating insight into life on the lake. Return for a lovely brunch at the Little Okavango amazing tower. Climb the 3 decks – the Weaver deck, the Lake deck and the Serengeti deck and take in the views over brunch before getting back on the boat to meander the short distance back to camp. After lunch and a rest, go for a bike ride through the open bush and village farms between the Serengeti boundary and the lake.

Day 3
After a leisurely breakfast, leave the camp and travel by game drive vehicle into Serengeti for the start of your fantastic wildlife safari.  Explore the wildlife rich areas of the western corridor arriving at the most unique and innovative safari camp set in the heart of wildlife activity. The Bush Rover suites are full working Land Rovers which open out into unique accommodation complete with flush toilet, shower and bath.   Each suite has solar power lights and hot water. Meals are served in a comfortable dining mess tent & bar area.  This exclusive camp offers a private, unique and exclusive way to experience perhaps the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth.

Day 4 – 6
Explore the game rich areas of Serengeti and marvel at the greatest safari spectacle in the world. Tanzania is blessed with an incredible array of safari experiences, but the Serengeti, with its magnificent migrating herds and huge population of predators, is unbeatable.

Each day you’ll embark on a morning game drive in search of an array of wildlife including lions, cheetah, leopard and buffalo. Return to the camp and relax in the mess tent or from the balcony of your Bush Rover suite taking in the amazing views before heading out on an afternoon game drive as the sun goes down. Overnight at the Bush Rover migration camp.

Day 7
After breakfast, game drive back to Lake Victoria for your last night at Little Okavango Camp. Enjoy fantastic sights from the tower some 25 metres tall with viewing decks where guests can have brunch, lunch or late afternoon drinks whilst taking in the lovely views. In the late afternoon, head out for bird walk. Dinner and overnight.

I am a big advocate of tourism supporting conservation and as importantly conservation supporting tourism. It’s a mutually beneficial circle. India is making good progress in this regard at least in terms of tourism supporting conservation, which brings me back to my pointers on getting the most out of a Tiger Safari. My advice is to travel in March or early April as it is getting warmer and Tigers look for watering holes to cool down in the morning, often in well-known locations. Take a safari that includes a minimum of six nights visiting more than one National Park in Madhya Pradesh. And choose wildlife specialists that support conservation to arrange your trip for you. The rest is down to luck. But if you’re looking for statistics, by following these pointers each of our safaris have averaged 7-18 different Tiger sightings in recent years and resulted in some fantastic images.

Jaguars do climb trees

In Brazils Pantanal Jaguars don't need to climb trees to escape other predators as is the case with leopards in Africa. However, height often gives them a better view and so from time to time we find Jaguars in trees during our safaris.
Of-course we don't just look for Jaguars on our safaris, we look for all creatures from birds to mammals to reptiles. This area is simply teaming with wildlife, but.....Jaguars are a prize draw and we usually see several different individuals on our safaris and have multi sightings of each Jaguar as we progress.

Jaguars everywhere

This years special group safari to Brazils Pantanal region was a huge success once again. Along with over eighty different bird species seen and many different larger species from river otters to capybara and crocs to iguanas; we had a plethora of Jaguar sightings.
We were privileged to be able to enjoy private sightings of Jaguars hunting, swimming and just watching the world go by.

Tigers: Some better news

I have been working in wildlife conservation and especially with big cats for the last fifteen years. And it gladdens my heart to be hopeful about Tiger conservation in India. Some of the policies that are being implemented there are not only great news for Tigers but would work well in Africa where I spend much of my year. For example, even in a country with over one billion people, the areas where Tigers are protected are being expanded. Wildlife corridors are supported and encouraged by the government. And best news of all, the Tiger population is steadily increasing.
Of-course there is still a lot to do, and sadly we have lost 97% of the Tiger population worldwide in the last 100 years. However, in India at least, the graph has turned north.
There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is that humans (in whatever guise whether politicians, conservationists, livestock owners, tourists or poachers turned game keepers), are making a difference.

Eight Jaguar sightings

Once again this years special Jaguar safari produced amazing wildlife sightings on a daily basis. Jaguars are of-course top of the list for most guests and we were not disappointed, enjoying eight sightings, two of which were with Jaguars hunting.
The best time to visit the Pantanal wetlands is during the dry season from June to September. Wildlife congregates around the riverbanks.
We explore the rivers and the land with our expert guides, looking for everything from jaguars and capybaras, to caiman and river otters. As throughout the rest of the year, birding is great and it is possible to see hyacinth macaws, as well as toucans, roseate spoonbills and the magnificent jabiru stork.

Tigers: Aren't they hard to see?

In early April this year I sat watching a Tigress serenely enjoying a cool dip one morning in Kanha National Park, India.  My safari guests were excitedly and somewhat anxiously clicking away. Their excitement taking precedence over my advice to relax, take your time, compose each shot and just enjoy the experience. Finally, their pace steadied, and heads began to come out from behind the cameras, smiling and enjoying spending quality time in the company of one of the world’s most beautiful creatures.
I thought back to 2018 when I had met first met some of this group and the inevitable question “Aren’t Tigers very difficult to see in the wild?” An understandable question, but actually not necessarily the case any longer.
Okay, so let me qualify that statement. There are a few things you need to get right to ensure the best chance of seeing not just one, but multiple Tigers.
Select the right time to visit India. Book early. Choose the best National Parks. And opt for a tour operator who understands wildlife. Tick all those boxes, and the chances of seeing Tigers are very high.

Look that says it all

If ever a look did say it all, it was this male lion looking very unhappy.
And why wouldn't he? After all he was busy doing what comes naturally with the new found love of his life and along came tourists to watch!
We quickly retreated, giving them some privacy.

Rukiya - Our Safari Base

Our safari home and base for much of our work in leopard conservation is Rukiya Safari Camp within the Wild Rivers Nature Reserve. As you might expect all of our standard itineraries start with time spent with our team at Rukiya, as it is offers a unique and intimate wildlife experience and the opportunity to take Big Five game drives in the adjacent Balule game reserve. When entering Wild Rivers Nature Reserve, expect to be immersed in the vista of endless woodland set against the back drop of the majestic Drakensberg mountains that change colour as the day walks on.  This 2,600 hectare reserve is bordered by both the Blyde and Olifants Rivers and boasts a diverse landscape with rocky outcrops and savanna where plains game roam freely. Leopard wander and river banks are frequented by hippo and crocodiles. Although Elephants and Lions are sometime seen on the reserve (having drifted into the reserve from the adjacent Kruger Park), there are normally no Big Five animals resident on the Reserve. Rukiya Safari Camp is an intimate, luxury tented camp situated on the confluence of the Blyde and Olifants Rivers in the heart of Wild Rivers Private Nature Reserve.
The development of the camp was done with a least-impact footprint with a variety of green or eco-friendly principles employed during the construction process. A large part of the area comprises of deck and canvass that has a minimal effect in contrast to conventional brick and mortar. The operation of the camp follows the ecological-sensitive philosophy by utilizing environmentally friendly products that does not contain harmful chemicals. Up-cycled drift- and pallet wood were used to furnish and decorate the camp and were sourced from local suppliers in support of the community.
Following a holistic approach to contribute to an ultimate nature experience, great care is taken to provide guests with all the special touches, pampering and comforts during their stay. Safaris and bush walks are part of the offering of all-inclusive packages. The iconic tented accommodation fortifies the African experience that allows guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of the magical Lowveld.  Six en-suite luxury tents  have been carefully placed underneath the shade of giant Jackalberry trees with wonderful views to the river.
