Who says Leopards are solitary

Great picture taken on safari by Steve Pollard. Thanks Steve for all the pics you sent and your kind words. Glad you enjoyed your safari experience with us.
I've been leading leopard research projects for over fifteen years and I can tell you that Leopards don't read the books. Their behaviour changes and adapts to their environment.
So when you read in guide books that Leopards are solitary creatures, well just check out the evidence as Steves picture shows.
And if you would like to be there yourself. Check out our website or Email mysafari@ontracksafaris.com for the latest special deals for 2019.

Lovely Hyenas

While there is often a preconception that Hyenas are ugly nasty creatures, which is probably due to their depiction in cartoons rather than anything else. In reality they are wonderful creatures, stunning to see and always popular with our safari guests.

Zanzibar

If a few days by the Indian Ocean relaxing at the end of your Safari sounds good, then Zanzibar offers just that. We have partnered with four lodges all owned by the same family located on the Eastern side of the Island. Here the warm Indian Ocean offers amazing white beaches and shade along the Palm tree groves. Our luxurious lodges are located along the beach. Each is different in terms of style and exclusivity, but all offer a wonderfully relaxing ambiance where you can enjoy a variety of water sports and off site visits. Or, as in my picture above, you can just lounge by the beach with a good book and a cool drink, enjoying the view.
Our website has more details, but you can also Email us for more information on 2019 packages.

Where to go Botswana - Makgadikgadi Pans

The intricate pan shapes of the Makgadikgadi were formed from the shrinking of an ancient lake. The resultant salt pans are in sharp contrast to the Okavango Delta’s explosion of life. It uniquely supports complex ecosystems of palms and baobab trees as well as seasonal wildlife when the rains come. In the wet summer season, visitors witness the overwhelming sight of zebra and wildebeest migration.
In the dry season, the Makgadikgadi Pans receives the world’s second largest zebra and wildebeest migration after the Serengeti - Masai Mara wildebeest migration. During the first months of each year, the landscape becomes green and robust attracting 25000 zebra and wildebeest to the Makgadikgadi Pans. In November, at the beginning of the rainy season, up to 25,000 zebra start their migration through the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Parks in search of water and lush grazing grounds.

Dogs Dogs

Wild Dogs are always a favourite with our safari guests. Sadly their numbers were decimated during the latter part of the twentieth century, but (especially in the reserves that we visit on safari), we're getting frequent and good sightings.

Where to go Botswana - Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is dubbed as the jewel of the Kalahari being blessed with a unique ecosystem serving as an oasis for its inhabitants. It is fed by the floodwaters of central Africa where the water fans out into the Okavango Delta forming a wetland system of beautiful palm-fringed channels, lagoons and islands that support a wealth of fauna and flora.
Along with beautiful water channels, lagoons and islands, there are trees, shrubs and bushes of various species. It is home to over 200,000 animals that roam its wilderness areas giving color to the whole Delta and Moremi Reserve.  Many of Afrcias iconic animals are resident in the area including Leopard, rhino, zebra, lechwe, giraffe, lion, monkey, antelope, crocodile, hippo, elephant, buffalo, hyena, impala, reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest and many more. There are also over 400 kinds of birds such as the African Eagle, Hammerkop, Ostrich, Crested Crane, elusive Pel's Fishing Owl, Lilac Roller etc.

The best way to explore the delta is by dugout canoe, locally called a mokoro, being gently propelled through this unique watercourse by your own guide. This is the ultimate relaxing approach to wildlife spotting whilst having an opportunity of seeing this unique environment from a different perspective.

Where to go in Botswana - Chobe NP

Chobe National Park, the first national park of Botswana, was established in 1968 and covers approximately 11,700 sq. kms, encompassing floodplains, swamps and woodland. It is the most accessible and frequently visited of Botswana’s big game country and is famous for its large herds of elephants, often reaching 100,000. During the dry winter months of May through to September enormous numbers of these pachyderms converge upon the river to drink, bathe and play.
And not only is it famous for its huge herds of elephant, but also its buffalo as well as the associated predators such as large prides of lion that have learnt to hunt them. There are also numerous antelope and other plains game as well as vast pods of hippos wallowing in the shallows of the River Chobe. Plus the birdlife is spectacular, so make sure you have your binoculars with you.

There are several game lodges set along the banks of the Chobe River from where you can enjoy daily game drives or boat based game viewing. Another option is to stay on a houseboat (our particular favourite) that enables you to game view 24 hours a day, should you choose to do so. Whilst on a houseboat, you are permanently on safari, which is a bit of a novelty in itself. Lounge on luxurious decking overlooking the water and watch vast pods of hippo as you float by or alternatively take out the smaller boats to get up close and personal with the wildlife and see Chobe from a different perspective.

The majestic Victoria Falls are very close by. A short two-hour road trip to the North Western corner of Zimbabwe. You can easily visit the falls on a day trip from tour Chobe lodge.

Botswana 2019

Botswana offers diverse ecosystems and fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities with some of the finest water-based safari activities in Africa. Having said that by including different styles of lodges and game reserves in your safari, you can combine both water based game viewing and the more traditional game drive vehicle style game viewing.
The tourism brand of the country “Africa’s Best Kept Secret” which is founded on the protection of its delicate environment and the pursuit of consistent sustainable development for the people of Botswana.
Botswana exhibits its exclusivity to an exceptionally high standard. The country has based its tourism industry on attracting discerning travelers who are willing to pay more for the privilege of visiting the country.  With this in mind many of the lodges, particularly in the Okavango, are only accessible by small plane, which pushes that exclusivity up even higher.
Many of the lodges are spectacular but in a stylish and simplistic way. The lodges beautifully blend into the ecosystem in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. It is all about being at one with nature, having a minimal impact on the environment and yet seeing it in style and with the luxury that guests expect from exclusive lodges.
Probably the biggest issue to consider when visiting Botswana is the scale of the country. The easiest and most popular method to move from one location to another is by small aircraft, however this does push the cost of your safari up. Our advice is to limit your trip to two main yet diverse locations and enjoy all that those areas offer.
With over fifteen years experience we can recommend various safari itineraries to maximize your wildlife experiences within your budget.
For example, a very popular favourite with our guests is to tailor a safari that includes a time spent in the Ockavango Delta and Chobe National park, which also enables a day visit across the bourder to Victoria Falls.
First step is to let us know the areas of Botsawana you would like to visit and on thereafter we can advise and recommend a safari to suit.
Contact Fiona and together we'll create a trip to suit your pocket and wishes.

Happy safari guests

Happy safari guests
One of the great pleasures of running safaris is seeing the happy faces of our guests after yet another amazing wildlife sighting.
Justin blown away
Pictured, is safari guest Justin who had been desperate to see Lions. Eighteen lions in one morning later; Justin was blown away. He had Buffalo chasing Lions and then Lions chasing a Leopard, all within a timespan of 8 mins.
Justins Lions
Once the excitement had died down, the Lion pride started to move to hunt. Even more excitement for Justin.

We believe that everyone should have the chance to see these pictures

Over the next months Carys Palmer (head researcher) will be installing more camera traps across our network of leopard research game reserves. This is essential ongoing research that has over the last ten years made a significant impact on leopard conservation in South Africa.

Our camera traps sit in remote and wild locations, secretly photographing everything that moves past the cameras day and night, giving us a unique insight into what happens when the game drives have returned to the lodges. We believe that everyone should have the chance to see these pictures which is why we created our Camera Trappers programme.
We very much hope that you can support our work in wildlife conservation by joining our camera trapper program You will receive an exclusive digest of the best pictures each month. Just click the link to find out more and subscribe via Paypal.
